What is the difference between an Architect, Spatial/ Interior designer and Interior Decorator?
. While an Interior designer and Architect have some overlapping areas of responsibility and common similarities in their training, these two careers are very distinct. Architects and Designers hold differing qualifications and have varying levels of skill and ability. Likewise, Interior designers and Interior decorators are often mistaken for the same thing, and while they too have similarities, they have some distinct differences. Architects focus on designing the actual structure of a building or space (both inside and out). An architect will likely have an architectural degree and be registered with the New Zealand Registered Architects Board (NZRAB). They must have a practising certificate and meet the requirements of the NZRAB – they cannot do any work as an architect without it. Architects will have knowledge of the Building Code and must be able to combine design with building constraints, they also have the ability to plan and supervise the construction. Interior designers should have undergone formal training, often at university with a focus on spatial design, and these professionals sit comfortably next to other formally recognised colleagues such as architects. Interior designers not only consider the aesthetics, but also the form and function of space. Interior designers should know the Building Code and be able to meet your local council's requirements. In contrast, Interior decorators focus completely on the aesthetics of a space. Often with a keen eye and natural sense of style they will recommend decorative elements such as finishes, furniture and accessories. Interior decorators typically have a less-formal educational qualification, such as a certificate or diploma, or completing vocational training.
How do I know if I need and Architect or a Spatial/ Interior Designer for my project?
. It is important to choose a designer according to the size and complexity of your project. It is not uncommon for an Architect and Interior designer to work together on the same project, both have an important role to play. An Interior designer deals mainly with the design and planning of the 'interior' of a structure, optimisng space and interior layout, where as an Architect is equipped to handle large scale complex projects that deal with the design and construction of both the interior and exterior. They predominantly work on projects that require a big team of consultants and when a professional is required to oversee the entire project from start to finish. If your project does NOT require a building consent an Interior designer is a great choice. If your renovation project is large enough that it DOES require a building consent you have 2 options. 1. Hire a registered Architect to design and draw the plans for council consent and construction 2. For a straight-forward project which requires a building consent (small extensions, additional windows or doors, a new bathroom, removing load bearing walls etc.) a great option is to enlist in the services of an Interior designer to design the interior layout and have a Draughtperson (who is much more affordable than an architect) draw up any details required for building consent and construction. Again, the scale of your project and also your projects budget are important deciding factors.
Why hire a Spatial Designer?
. A Spatial designer's role is to unlock the potential of a space by designing environments that support, influence, and transform the lives of those experiencing them. Rather than foussing solely on aesthetic a spatial designer takes a function first approach, they study how interior spaces feel, how they are organised and how people move and interact within. They then consider ways to enrich those spaces and design the layout based on their clients needs and lifetyle.
Why not just ask my builder to come up with a plan?
. There's nothing to say you can't! A builders skill set is very different to that of a Spatial designer. A builder has hands on knowledge and will offer guidance and advice on how he can help construct your project, however when it comes to the planning and designing of the space they are most likely to take a very practical approach rather than thinking creatively about the best use of space. Sometimes the builder will outsource the design to an interior designer, which is great. But so often the designs are not completed by a qualified designer. It is also worth noting, a builder will usually wait until you lock in a contract with them before they provide a thorough design service. This makes it hard to compare quotes based on the same design. Finally, check that you’ll be receiving 3D renders as part of the service, so you have a clear understanding of what the final outcome will be.
Do you prepare structural drawings for council consent?
. As a Spatial designer I am not permitted to submit drawings to council for consent. I can help you engage with a Draughtsperson or Architect who can take my designs and prepare the plans and structural specifications needed for council consent.
What type of drawings do you provide?
. Concept Plans Proposed Plans Existing & Demolition Plans Internal Sections Internal Elevations 3D Renders Specification Drawings Fixture and finishes schedules Door & window schedules Reflected ceiling plans Lighting & Electrical Plans
I already have my space designed but need help visualising it. Can you provide 3D renders only?
. Yes, if you already have a comprehensive plan worked out but are struggling to visualise the space I can help by creating detailed 3D renders. This is the perfect tool to help identify any design issues that may have gone unnoticed on a 2D plan.
Have a project you'd like to discuss?
Do you work on projects outside of New Plymouth?
. I have a number of service packages that can be offered virtually. Which means I can help from wherever you are in New Zealand. Check out my 'Packages' page for more details.
What is your personal style?
. Personally I have always loved the mid-century architecture of California. However, as a designer I am not bound to any particular interior style and it is my job to work with my clients to uncover what makes them excited about interiors.
What are your qualifications?
. I hold a Bachelor (Degree) of Design with a major in Spatial Design.
Can you help with selecting the finishes and fixtures for my kitchen or bathroom design?
. As an add on to my services I am more than happy to work with you to select your tapware/ hardware/ tiles/ flooring etc.
Can I put forward my own fixtures and finishes ideas for the design?
. Yes absolutely! I am happy to work into the design any tapware / tiles/ flooring that you have already selected.
Do you help with the selection of furniture and furnishings?
. Unfortunately my scope of work does not include the selection and procurement of furniture and soft furnishings etc.
I have a specific interior decor style that I like. Can you present the 3D renders in that style?
. Of course! During the on-boarding process one of the (many) things I find out is what your preferred interior style is. This is so that when I come to produce the 3D renders that help you visualise your space I can give you a true sense of what the space could look like when finished to your personal taste.
I'm not sure what I need. Is this service for me?
. The short answer is Yes! The long answer is, if you are not sure how I can help or what exactyly you are needing help with- book a free 15 minute discovery call and we can talk through your concerns and discuss ways I might be able to assist with your project.
Why should I trust you to design my home?
. I understand how overwhelming renovating can feel, you want to make sure your money is well spent and you want to get things right! When choosing a designer to work with it is important to work with someone who has the right qualifications, who is transparent, who puts your needs at the forefront of the design process and who has the skills to bring your vison to life. When you engage with Spaces by Design you are not dealing with a large company where you get lost in the system, you are dealing with me, the sole owner & designer, I put my heart and integrity into every project and personally makes sure my clients are satisfied with the service I provide.
